"Yet again Harvard Singapore Foundation has found a fascinating speaker to share social capital insights on a critically important mission: philanthropy. Paul introduced the concept of “strategic philanthropy” by overlaying the theory with the story of 'grantee' Christopher Columbus and 'social entrepreneur' Queen Isabella — an innovative and ultimately very effective approach. If I were to rename the talk, it would actually be: “Philanthropy Done Right. Listen Closely!”

Best,
James Norris

Social Capital + Enterprise Creation: Living Case & Lessons from 150-Year Tata Sons Trust

We are pleased to invite you to Harvard Singapore Foundation's social capital event,
Social Capital + Enterprise Creation: Living Case & Lessons from 150-Year Tata Sons Trust
by Harvard Business School-Kennedy School of Government Emeritus Professor Dennis Encarnation on 16th December 2010.

"Harvard Singapore Foundation has managed to bring an expert on one of the world's most interesting and complicated enterprises: the Tata Group. Tata is a pioneer for many reasons, but personally I'm most interested in their philanthropic work. Dennis Encarnation really brought the value of this work to life in his talk, although I admit he left me with even more questions than I came in with. Tata is a hugely complex beast and Dennis was only able to scratch the surface.

The audience seemed generally receptive to his positive thoughts on Tata, although some did question just how noble their day-to-day actions really were. After all, with 90+ companies and almost 400,000 people it must be challenging to always hold true to the founder's original vision. From my conversation with Dennis and some research after the talk, I've become deeply impressed with the precedent they've set for the world. More enterprises should follow in their footsteps.

And I'd add that Singapore should do all it can to tell these kind of win-win stories! Social change is not mutually exclusive with earning economic profit. I'm very appreciative of HSF helping to spread that message. "

Cheers,
James Norris

COMMENTARY: He hit the nail on the head with the sentence "Social change is not mutually exclusive with earning economic profit". Here's a different take: “To accomplish social change without economic profit is hard.”
