COURSE STRUCTURE
Student will be admitted to the MSc programme either as a
full-time or part-time student at the beginning of an academic year. The
requirements for the MSc degree
include:
a)
Successful completion of a total of 30 academic units (AUs) -- The students
must select one of the two Options of Study, namely:
(i)
Coursework & Dissertation Option:
four core courses and four electives of 3 AUs each as
well as undertake a research project of 6 AUs on an
approved topic based upon which a dissertation must be submitted.
(ii) Coursework Only Option:
four core courses, five electives and an Independent Study Module (ISM)
of 3 AUs, or in the case of Communication Software &
Networks programme, students are allowed to have four core courses, four
electives and a software development project (EE6733) of 6 AUs. Student working on the Independent Study Module (EE6X90) is expected to undertake an independent in-depth study on an
assigned topic under supervision.
b)
A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.5 is attained
at the completion of the programme of study.

Classes are normally conducted in the evening on a semester basis.
Each course consists of 39 hours of lectures. Classes for each course are held
once a week for three hours and examinations will be conducted during office
hours at the end of each semester.
OPTION OF STUDY:
Students are allowed to choose to complete the programme of
study by :
I.
Coursework & Dissertation; OR
II.
Coursework Only
Students
should confirm their option of study through GSLink
services within the Course Registration Period. In general, the Graduate Studies Office will notify students via
e-mail about the courses registration period.
Students may not need to make a decision on Option
of Study at the beginning of Semester I, to avoid making a hasty decision &
request changes later on. Once they have confirmed their option of study through
the GSLink services system, they are not allowed
to change it through the system again. Thus, please consider carefully and
consult his/her supervisor if necessary, before selecting the option.

COURSEWORK & DISSERTATION
For this option of study, the
coursework component comprises a total of 8 courses of 3 AUs
each, of which, 4 are core courses and 4 are elective
courses. Each student is also required to undertake a research project of 6 AUs based on which a dissertation must be submitted.
COURSEWORK ONLY (COURSEWORK + INDEPENDENT STUDY MODULE)
Students have the option to replace
the project dissertation module with an elective course and an Independent
Study Module EE6X90. The Independent Study Module (EE6X90) can be taken in any
semester. (Student must also register the Independent Study
Module through the Graduate Course Registration System during the registration
period even students have selected the topic with the School.)
COURSEWORK ONLY (COURSEWORK + SOFTWARE PROJECT)
Students
taking the Coursework Only option in the Communication Software & Networks
programme can opt for 4 core courses and 4 elective courses with a
communication software development and project management module (EE6733). The
software project module is carried out by a group of 5 to 6 students over 2
semesters (for full-time programme) or 3 semesters (for part-time programme).
Students need not register for EE6733, but it will be registered on their
behalf based on their project selections.
CANDIDATURE:
The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for a
full-time student are one academic year (2 semesters) and three academic years
(6 semesters) respectively. For a part-time student, the minimum and maximum
periods of candidature are two academic years (4 semesters) and four academic
years (8 semesters) respectively.
NO. OF COURSES REGISTER
PER SEMESTER:
The maximum number of courses that a student can take in any
semester is 5 for full-time students and 3 for part-time students, including Independent Study Module (if students have taken the Coursework Only Option), or 2 for part-time students in the Communication Software &
Networks programme (if students have commenced on the software development
project). However, the dissertation project is not
counted as a course for this purpose.
