Assessment

Students’ performance during the project will be closely monitored and assessed according to a set of criteria. The assessment will contribute towards the overall examination results and is currently equivalent to 3 academic units in the Academic Units System.

Each student will be assessed continuously and individually by his/her project supervisors. The areas of assessment are:

  • Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Project Report

  • Oral Presentation

  • Attendance and Participation

In addition, a group mark would be awarded based on the Design and Innovation Competition. This would also contribute towards the overall grade of each student in EE2079.

 Technical Knowledge and Skills

As the technical project is the core of the DIP program, each student’s ability to apply knowledge acquired in other courses to practical use in the project shall be carefully monitored and assessed. The practical skills may include hardware prototyping, software programming, system integration, technical design and analysis, team-working with other project group members, technical communication skills, and other technical qualities deemed necessary by the project supervisors. Students should update their logbooks regularly for their supervisors’ assessment. At the end of the project, deliverables such as hardware or software prototypes, designs and concepts should be produced for final assessment in this area.

Project Report

By the beginning of the last week of the program, each student should submit a detailed project report either singly or jointly with other sub-group members, as specified by the project supervisors. The report besides documenting the techniques, experiences and results achieved in the project, may also include business plan, manufacturing process and user’s manual.

Oral Presentation

Every student is required to present his/her contribution in the project orally to an audience of staff and students, usually in their respective laboratories. This is normally held towards the end of the five-week program. The presentation of 5 to 10 minutes should focus on the achievements and problems encountered in the course of the project.

Attendance and Participation

All students are expected to exercise mature responsibility and active participation throughout the DIP program, to the satisfaction of their project supervisors. Regular attendance in assigned laboratory is compulsory. The normal working hours are from 8.45am to 5.15pm on Mondays to Fridays.
