INTRODUCTION
The School of EEE has an Academic Advisory Scheme to provide guidance and support to students, thereby creating a conducive and caring environment for students to excel in his/her academic pursuits. In this scheme, each professor will assume a leading and pro-active role of a mentor. Every student will be able to benefit from this scheme towards the objective of achieving a good university education and success in future endeavours. Students can seek friendly informed advice and guidance in areas of their studies, such as course structure, course registration, time management, etc. from their respective mentors. This scheme can also be a means for students to propel themselves to greater heights by tapping into the enormous resource of talent and expertise right at their doorstep.
There is a Staff-Student Committee in the School comprising staff and student representatives. Its primary role is to facilitate the link between the School and students in the pursuit of academic excellence.
To put it simply, the objective of the Academic Advisory Scheme is to:
- Guide each student in fulfilling his/her academic pursuits.
- Inculcate the E3 sense of belonging by establishing good student-staff rapport and interaction.
- Improve the operation of the School through constant feedback from students.
ORGANISATION
Each EEE student is assigned a professor who will be his/her mentor throughout his/her entire programme in the School. There is an online student-advisor record for every student that is maintained by his/her
mentor. It provides a record of meetings between the mentor and the student.
Both the mentor and the student are encouraged to adopt a pro-active attitude towards establishing a good personal rapport right from the beginning. The advisor can get to know his/her students better by having informal gatherings. The students, on the other hand, can meet their
mentors privately in their offices to find out more about the University, the School and the EEE programme, especially during the initial weeks of the semester before their lessons get into full swing. Students may also consult their Design & Innovation Project (DIP) supervisors, Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus (URECA) project supervisors, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) supervisors, Industrial Attachment (IA) tutors and Final Year Project (FYP) supervisors as they progress up from their second to the final year.
The mentors will be the first
line of contact for the students and the School. The mentor is a good source of information on university life, student exchange programmes, Academic Unit System (AUs), examinations, DIP, URECA, UROP, IA, FYP, resources available in the school, library, etc. The
mentors further provide guidance on course registration and overloading, time management, consistency in academic work and achieving a good balance between studies and extra-curricular activities. The
mentors are ready to offer counselling and advice on academic matters such as the choice of the final year option, elective courses, course structure, projects, and companies for IA, etc. They can also serve as referees for students in their exchange programmes, scholarships and job applications as well as postgraduate studies, etc. They also provide guidance on technopreneurship, career choice and advancement in industry as well as research and academic opportunities in the universities and research institutions. Hence, it is very important for you to constantly keep in touch with your
mentors.
Note that All Student-Mentor meetings will be conducted in the strictest confidence.
