The Part-time B.Eng Programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) was launched in 1996 on the self-financed basis with the aim of providing a platform for polytechnic graduates to further their studies and to obtain degrees on a part-time basis while remaining in their respective jobs. The Programme is offered only to applicants who have already obtained a Diploma in Electrical/ Electronics Engineering or an equivalent qualification from one of the polytechnics in Singapore, and are in full time employment in a technical job.
The intake of the EEE Part-time B.Eng students has been kept around 150 every year. The student number dropped quickly through the first semester, but maintained at around 80 until their final two years of study. The drop out rate of about 35% - 45%, after Year 1 of study, has been observed since the 1st batch. Since 2005, the number of applicants has been increased, so we have increased the intake to more than 180 places, but expecting the number of students settle to less than 150 after semester 1. Every year, a Call-for-Application to the Part-time BEng Programme is advertised on several newspapers in mid-December. A briefing for all prospective students is conducted usually a week before the closing date for submission on the second week of January. Detailed information of the Programme is available on the website of the School of EEE. Since December-2000, on-line submission of applications has been available. All part-time students also go through an Orientation Programme similar to that conducted for full-time students, before they begin their first semester of study.
The curriculum of the Part-time BEng Programme has been revised from time to time in line with the curriculum of the full-time BEng course. Part-time students follow the curriculum prepared for full-time direct-entry students (Diploma holders) closely, except that part-time students gain the exemption for the inter-semester project course and industrial attachment in their Year 2 and Year 3 of study respectively, as well as an exemption for 2 Academic Units of General Electives in Year 4 or Year 5 of study. Part-time students also enjoyed the benefit of broad-based education in the recent curriculum review. Two bridging courses in mathematics and science are included in the new curriculum for diploma holder students in their first year to prepare them better for the subsequent years. To balance their workload, they are exempted for the same number of Academic Units of General Electives. Today, part-time students in Year 4 and Year 5 have enjoyed the opportunity to attend almost as many options as what are offered to full-time students, as long as the number of students for each course is about 10.
The part-time students sit for the same examination as their full-time counterparts and after successful completion of the course requirements, receive the same BEng degree in Electrical Engineering, which is wholly recognized by reputable professional institutions such as The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), The Singapore Professional Engineers Board and The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) of the United Kingdom. Year 2001 marks the 20th Anniversary of NTU as well as the graduation of the first batch of Part-time BEng students. After 5 years of sacrifices and hard-work, 73 students graduated and many received good honours. About 10 students of this batch graduated one semester later. This pattern has varied slightly from year to year. So far the PT BEng Programme has been a great success of NTU maximizing its output with the same facilities.
