Highlights of Research Activities

Since the establishment of the group in 1993, research funding over S$8.9m has been secured. The research output has resulted in more than 250 refereed journals and international conferences papers. A total of 10 patents on some unique features of the filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) system design and process technology have been filed/granted, and one spin-off company has been formed to commercialise the technology. In 1997, our research team was awarded the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award for research in advancing the FCVA technology. In 2000, the team was awarded the National Technology Award for their outstanding contributions in R&D on a new FCVA technology.

In 2003, a total of 4 research projects were completed. 63 journal and 8 conference papers were also published. In 2004, a total of 6 research projects and 6 PhD, 2 MEng/MSc theses were completed. 64 journal and 32 conference papers were also published. One paper won the ICMCTF 2004 Bunshah award for innvoative achievements in the science and technology of coating and thin film deposition. Currently, the research group supports 16 ongoing research projects with an aggregate funding of S$4.62M. Several MOUs were signed in 2004 with A*STAR RIs (Data Storage Institute and SIMTECH) and overseas universities (Fudan University, East China Normal University in China and Nanostructural Analysis Network Organisation (NANO) in Australia).

In 2006, the group completed 2 research projects and had 2 PhD these completed. In addition, group members published a total of 68 journal papers. The group also secured new grants with a total funding of more than S$1.5m, and signed a three-party MOU involving NTU, the Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan and the National University of Singapore for collaborative research on nanotechnology.

The group is also pleased to report that A/Ps Yu Siu Fung and Lau Shu Ping won the Nanyang Award in Research and Innovation 2006. In addition, A/P Lau Shu Ping also served as a Guest Editor of the Journal of Crystal Growth while A/P Sun Xiaowei was invited to serve as an Editorial Board member of the International Journalof Nanotechnology.
