Biography

Er. Dr. Er Meng Hwa was born in Singapore in 1956. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) degree with First Class Honours from National University of Singapore in 1981 and his PhD degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 1986. He joined the Nanyang Technological Institute, the predecessor of NTU in 1985 as a lecturer and has risen to hold several key management and leadership positions at the University. He was founding Director of the Centre for Signal Processing from 1995 to 1997, Dean of the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering from 1996 to 2005, Dean of College of Engineering from 2001 to 2004 and Deputy President 2 from 1998 to 2006. As Acting Provost since April 2006, he helps to provide academic leadership on matters relating to academic programmes and faculty, and to advance and support excellence in teaching and learning, research and academic engagements within the University.

In 2005, Prof Er was conferred the prestigious title of Honorary Fellow by the London-based Institution of Electrical Engineers in recognition of his outstanding contribution to engineering research, education and public service. He is the first Singaporean to receive the award.
