The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was one of the three founding schools of Nanyang Technological University, then known as Nanyang Technological Institute which was set up in 1981. Now, the School is one of the component schools under the renowned College of Engineering together with five other engineering schools namely, Chemical & Biomedical Engineering, Civil & Environmental, Computer, Mechanical & Aerospace and Materials Science & Engineering.

The School offers two 4-year Direct Honours professional degree programmes - Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Information Engineering & Media. The number of graduates has steadily increased over the years, from the first batch of 194 in 1985 to about 800 today. The School currently has an undergraduate enrolment of around 3200, and is one of the largest schools in Electrical & Electronic Engineering in the world. In addition to its undergraduate programmes, the School offers 9 MSc programmes by coursework and dissertation in specialised areas of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and the MEng & PhD degrees by research with a total graduate student enrolment of about 1200.

The School has a full-time faculty of close to 200 academic staff members with broad and varied background and strong research and professional expertise. They are supported by some 400 research, technical and administrative staff members. Apart from teaching the undergraduate and graduate courses, faculty members are active in research and development, engaging in a broad range of collaborations with renowned overseas universities, research institutes and multinational companies.

The teaching and research activities of the School are organised under the following divisions:
  1. Division of Power Engineering
  2. Division of Circuits and Systems
  3. Division of Information Engineering
  4. Division of Control and Instrumentation
  5. Division of Communication Engineering
  6. Division of Microelectronics
To support advanced research, the school hosts the following research centres and facilities which are equipped with sophisticated and state-of-the-art equipment:
  1. Center for Smart Energy Systems (CSES)
  2. Centre for Integrated Circuits & Systems (CICS)
  3. Centre for Information Security (CIS)
  4. Centre for Intelligent Machines (CIM)
  5. Centre for Modeling and Control of Complex Systems (CMCCS)
  6. Centre for Signal Processing (CSP)
  7. Electromagnetic Effects Research Laboratory (EMERL)
  8. Microelectronics Centre (MEC)
  9. Network Technology Research Centre (NTRC)
  10. Photonics Research Centre (PhRC)
  11. Positioning and Wireless Technology Centre (PWTC)
  12. Satellite Engineering Centre (SEC)
Besides the twelve centres, there are more than sixty-five laboratories, supporting both the teaching and research activities in the School.
