It works by changing some of the network protocol parameters. By default Win95 assumes that you are connected to shared local area network and uses appropriate values for this arrangement. Most home users, however, connect via a modem using the Point-to-Point protocol (PPP). By using values more suited to this type of connection it is possible to reduce the amount of time spent splitting data files into packets and subsequently reassembling them. For more information on this tweak check Mike Salisbury's MTU page. PPP-Boost is a small freeware utility that allows you to try this technique for yourself. Simply run PPP-Boost, select the recommended settings and reboot your PC.

  • SYMPTOMS
    When you are transmitting data over high-delay networks (for example, satellite links), transfer throughput may be lower than expected and the number of packets retransmitted may be unnecessarily high.
  • CAUSE
    This problem occurs because TCP uses a retransmit timer to retransmit packets that do not seem to have reached the receiver. To set this timer, TCP uses information about the historical round trip time (RTT) for each connection, which it measures by observing the time between sending packets and receiving acknowledgments for them.

The Windows 95 and Windows 98 TCP/IP stack incorrectly computes the retransmit timer because of a math error. When you are transmitting packets over high-delay networks, this can result in unnecessary retransmissions and lower throughput.

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Refer to this page for details.

• Description: Empty Temp Folders (emptemp) helps you manage folders that contain temporary files, left over by other applications. • Description: Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and they are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive. Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the US Department of Defence and overwriting with pseudorandom data. There are also many more free libraries of icons from the company's website, but most of them are specialised and tailored for the American market. Happy 98 should be enough to keep you happy and amused for quite a while.
  Note: You need not install Microangelo in order to use the libraries, but it does make the browsing of icons easier. If you do not use Microangelo programs, the library file extensions are not automatically recognised by the Windows file open extensions. However, by selecting to display all files, clicking on the individual .icl files will open the particular library and the icons in that library will become visible.

Notes

• You should run the Remove Hidden Data add-in on files when you are ready to publish them. This is because some of the data that the tool removes is used by Office for collaboration features, such as Track Changes, Comments, and Send for Review.
• You should always save to a new file name, rather than overwrite the original file with the new document, in order to preserve a copy of the document containing the original data.
• The Remove Hidden Data add-in does not work with Information Rights Management-protected or digitally-signed files.

After you install the Remove Hidden Data add-in, open the document you want to review then, on the File menu, click Remove Hidden Data.

Note: If you do not see the Remove Hidden Data command on the File menu, check the following:

2. Under Macro Security, click Macro Security.
3. Click the Trusted Publishers tab.
4. Select the Trust all installed add-ins and templates check box, and then click OK twice.

• Description: SkyMap Pro 9 is a sophisticated star charting and planetarium program. It can display the sky as seen from any location on earth for any date between 4000BC and 8000AD, showing fields of view ranging from the entire visible sky down to a detailed telescopic "finder chart" for a faint galaxy. The program also provides a powerful set of tools for observation planning and recording. The program is easy to learn to use, and is primarily controlled with the mouse using simple "toolbars". A printed tutorial manual and detailed "on line" help system provides extensive operating instructions and reference information. SkyMap Pro 9 is supplied on CD-ROM and contains over 580MB of data, so it's impractical to make the complete package available for download. What the company has done, therefore, is to put together a demonstration version of the product. The demonstration version of SkyMap Pro 9 comprises the program and manual, together with a small database of 15,000 stars (down to magnitude 7) and 13,000 deep sky objects. It runs entirely from hard disk, occupying 18MB of hard disk space when installed. The main differences between the demonstration version of SkyMap Pro and the full product are:
  • Only a tiny fraction of the data present in the full version is available in the evaluation version. The full version has some 15 million stars down to magnitude 15, complete double and variable star catalogs, and approximately 250,000 deep sky objects.
  • The observing log and observation planning tools are not present.
  • Solar eclipse maps are not available, although local circumstances of solar eclipses are.
  • Printed star charts are "watermarked" to indicate that they were produced by the demonstration version of the program.
