Design for Sustainability (SF Series)

Introduction

The 21st century is marked by unprecedented climate change brought about by human activity, especially in the
design, use and retirement of products. Non-renewable natural resources are being consumed at a rate that is
unsustainable, while greenhouse gas emissions are at their highest levels since the first industrial revolution. Because
of intense hyper competition globally, extremely short product cycles are the norm, exerting considerable pressure on
both designers and fabricators alike. And yet, despite all this, it is still possible for humankind to thrive, provided we
are more circumspect about what we do that impact the natural environment.

Objectives

The aim of this short course is to introduce participants to contemporary design thinking that preserves the natural
environment through a broad overview of topics as shown in the outline.

Outline

PART A: Design for Manufacture (DFM)

DFM principles
Merits and limitations
Manufacturing processes and process capability

PART B: Design for Sustainability

Design for the Environment (DFE)
Waste minimization
ISO 14000 : eco-labelling
Life cycle Assessment (including a worked example) (LCA)
Design for Recovery (Guidelines and principles)
Dis-assembly (DFdA)
Remanufacture (DFReman)
Recycling (DFRecycle)

Extended Producer Responsibility
VDI 2243 Recycling-oriented product development
Product-Service Systems (PSS)

The seminars will be supplemented by class discussions, tutorials and formative assessments.

Trainer(s)

Associate Professor Lee, Siang Guan Stephen

Dr Stephen S-G LEE is an associate professor and head of the manufacturing engineering division of the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, NTU. Dr Lee has many years of experience in design and manufacturing at senior management level. He taught and supervised projects involving Design for Assembly at the undergraduate level for several years.

His PhD research was in part design for automatic assembly but his current research interests are in product lifecycle management and dynamic enterprise collaboration.

Dr Lee is a registered professional engineer and a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. An active member of the SME since 1987, Dr Lee held senior appointments in the Singapore Chapter, culminating with the Chapter Chairmanship in 1990. In 1992, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers conferred on him its Award of Merit and in 1998, he was elected to its College of Fellows.
