Failure Analysis and Prevention for Engineering Materials, Structures and Devices (e2i)(PDU)(SFC) 

Introduction

In manufacturing a component or constructing a structure, design engineers typically consider pertinent factors such as functional requirements, reliability, safety, cost and adverse environmental conditions that might potentially affect their design. Unfortunately, we regularly come across failure of various engineering designs due to limitations in material performance having been altogether overlooked or critical loading conditions having been conveniently ignored in the analysis.

With failure analysis becoming increasingly important to engineers and designers, the aim of this course is to provide an intensive introduction to the subject via vivid case examples. In particular, relevant aspects of the mechanical behaviour of materials to the design process are explored and explained. 

Objectives

Upon completion of this short course, participants will be able:
To analyse engineering failures critically in a given design by considering all possible failure mechanisms (sometimes, these failure mechanisms may be competing with one another).
To understand the significance of generic mechanical properties of materials and their behaviour when influenced by structural, process and environmental considerations.
To obtain greater exposure to the inter-relationship among the material, functional and analytical aspects of the design process.
 

Outline

This course will be taught by means of real life case examples. Structural or component failures that involve the following mechanisms will be thoroughly examined.

Elastic instability
Plastic yielding
Brittle fracture
Fast fracture
Fatigue mechanisms
Creep
Corrosion and other environmental failure
Failure of composites
Failure Inspection Techniques, including NDT

Case studies also include failure analysis from mechanical engineering, aerospace, maritime and off-shore structures, mechanical/thermal failures in electronic devices etc.  

Trainer(s)

Associate Professor Idapalapati, Sridhar

Dr. I. Sridhar is currently an Assistant Professor at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He is a Cambridge Nehru Scholar and holds a Ph.D. in mechanics of solids from the University of Cambridge and a First-class Honours (with Distinction) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), India. He also holds a Master of Technology degree from Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Kanpur, India specializing in mechanics of solids & design. Prior to joining NTU, Dr. I. Sridhar worked as a Visiting Scientist at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA. and prior to that as a Research Associate at Cambridge University Engineering Department, UK. Dr. I. Sridhar has researched in areas such as thin films, ultrasonic NDT, manufacturing processes, sandwich panel design, nano-tribology and cellular solids.

Associate Professor Xiao, Zhongmin

Dr. Xiao is Associate Professor at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He obtained his M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Mechanics from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. His expertise is in fatigue and fracture failure mechanics, Micromechanics and Reliability of Materials and Structures, Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Micro Electronics Devices, Design and Fabrication of MEMS (Mechanical-Electronic Micro Systems). He is an associate editor for the International Journal of Microelectonics and Electronic Packaging. At NTU he teaches subjects on Failure Analysis and Prevention, Mechanical Properties of Advanced Materials, etc. He has published extensively is well-known international Journal of Fracture, Engineering Fracture Mechanics, International Journal of Solids and Structures.

This course is relevant for practicing engineers in the industry (mechanical, automotive, aerospace, marine), researchers, professional engineers (PEs), designers, manufacturers and technical specialists with interests centered on the problems and challenges associated with failure analysis and design implications of engineering structures and components.

To be eligible for e2i 50% subsidy, participants:
- must be Singaporeans or Permanent Residents of Singapore
- achieve minimum 75% attendance per run
* Participants who do not fulfill the above criteria are not eligible for e2i funding, and are required to pay the course fee in full.
