Materials and Process Selection - A Systematic Approach [12 PDUs awarded]
Introduction |
Materials limit the performance of various engineering designs. To-date an estimated 80,000 materials are available to any design engineer to fabricate a component. Material and process selection should be considered at all the stages (conceptual, embodiment and detailed) of engineering design/analysis with different levels of precision. The material choice could change depending upon the application even for the same function (for example common riding bicycles are made of aluminum, steel framed cycles for mountaineering and GFRP bi-cycles for racing applications). The manufacturing process that needs to be adopted depends upon the material and the component shape for certain loadings.
Materials and the processing technology play a dominant role in the cost of the product and its impact on the environment. Consumers are quite conscious about the cost of any product. In the fields of mechanical & civil engineering, material costs often exceed 50% of the product cost and the volume of material used is quite large. The cost of materials in the microelectronics industry comprise less than about 1-2% of the product cost (but it requires a high-purity material).
Materials create opportunities for innovation in the design of new applications and/or for the improved design of an existing product. This short course is all about choosing the right material for a given function and also processing route to be adopted. Special topics such as composites materials, metallic foams and biomaterials will be covered in this course |
