WSQ Design for Assembly in Manufacturing (SFC)(PDU)(WSQ) |
|
Introduction |
Best-selling products are innovative, satisfy customer needs, are of high quality and are value for money. Under-pinning a best-selling product are ease of manufacture and assembly. Typically 53% of all manufacturing time is due to assembly while 75% of the cost of a manufactured product is determined at the design stage. It is therefore imperative to learn about the underlying principles of design for ease of assembly.
The course is designed for technical personnel in design, manufacturing, process and quality control. After the course, participants can appreciate the underlying principles and rules for manufacturing a high quality, cost-effective product.
The objective of the course is to teach the principles and techniques to design for ease of assembly. |
Objectives |
1. To learn the basic principles of design for assembly
2. To be able to assess a design/product for ease of assembly
3. To improve on the design/product for easy of assembly
Underpinning Knowledge
1. Material properties.
2. Fabrication process capabilities.
3. Component/part design.
4. Basic design rules. |

Trainer(s) |
Associate Professor Lee, Siang Guan Stephen |
Dr Stephen S-G LEE is an associate professor and head of the manufacturing engineering division of the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, NTU. Dr Lee has many years of experience in design and manufacturing at senior management level. He taught and supervised projects involving Design for Assembly at the undergraduate level for several years.
His PhD research was in part design for automatic assembly but his current research interests are in product lifecycle management and dynamic enterprise collaboration.
Dr Lee is a registered professional engineer and a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. An active member of the SME since 1987, Dr Lee held senior appointments in the Singapore Chapter, culminating with the Chapter Chairmanship in 1990. In 1992, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers conferred on him its Award of Merit and in 1998, he was elected to its College of Fellows. |
