Generating Creative Ideas to Design Effective Graphics (SFC) 

Introduction

This course is designed to promote creative thinking in solving 2D design graphic problems. Participants will be introduced to different ways of thinking creatively to unlock their visual imagination. They will be presented with numerous graphic design problems which require them to solve through visual expression. There will also be numerous opportunities for participants to evaluate effective graphics such as in poster, invitation, flyer, brochure, and signage etc that communicate with impact. 

Objectives

• To promote creativity in solving 2D graphic design problems
• To nurture originality through ideas creation and visual expression
• Apply and evaluate creative ideas for effective graphic designs that communicate
 

Outline

1. Participants learn the various ways to think creatively, for example, how Divergent Thinking, Associative Thinking, Analogical Thinking, Lateral Thinking, Free Association with Words, images, sound, touch and motion and Cliché with a Twist can be used to unlock visual imagination.
2. Participants form groups to solve design problems given to them using the creative thinking techniques learned.
3. Each group presents the design solution in class which is followed by a critique.
4. Participants also learn the promotional objective, the message for the target audience and the spirit of the promotional effort.
5. They learn to perceive and analyse graphics such as poster, invitation, flyer, brochure, signage etc to understand what make effective and memorable visual images that have impact.  

Trainer(s)

Mdm Poo, Peggy Siu Kay

Peggy Poo-Pun Siu Kay holds a BA degree with Honours and High Distinction in Design from University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and a MA Degree in Communication Arts from University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. She started her career as a graphic designer in New York City. She later spent twelve years as senior TV Producer/Director and later as Executive Producer at Singapore Broadcasting Corporation. She has more than ten years of teaching experience in design and moving images and is presently a Lecturer at the School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University. Courses she conducted include “Aesthetic and Creative Use of the 2D Media”; “Creative Design in Communication and Marketing”; “Aesthetic and Creative Techniques in the Moving Images”; and “Creative Thinking in Design Solutions”. Her research papers and interests focus on visual literacy, visual language, visual communication, creative thinking in design and collaborative learning. Her paper “Inculcating Visual Literacy to Meet the Professional Needs of Engineering Undergraduates” won her the Silver Award for Best Paper.

Who Should Attend

Those who have just embarked on their careers or have a few years of experience in graphic design, media and advertising and anyone whose duty requires him/her to evaluate the effectiveness of graphics and create attention grabbing poster, invitation, flyer, brochure, and signage etc that can communicate with impact.

Additional requirements:
1. Participants can bring along their own laptop (preferably with Adobe Photoshop or any other graphic software installed).
2. Participants can bring their own 2B & 4B pencils, colour pencils or markers.

Replacement Policy

Given a 3 days notice before course commencement, companies may replace participants who have signed up for the course. Terms and conditions apply.

 

There is no replacement for participant utilising SkillsFuture Credit. Participant to cancel their SkillsFuture Credit claim with WDA.
