About the SCE Safety Committee

Welcome to the SCE Safety Committee website.

The Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSHA) came into force on 1 March 2006. The Act requires stakeholders to take reasonably practicable measures to ensure the safety and health of all employees. It focuses on effective management of workplace safety and health to achieve desired safety outcomes.

In compliance with WSHA, the SCE Safety Committee was formed in June 2006. The primary role of the Safety Committee is to proactively manage workplace safety and health and to cultivate good safety habits. The vision of the Safety Committee is encapsulated in its terms of reference stated here.

Terms of Reference of the Safety Committee

• Foster and promote safety through the designing of safety measures, procedures and systems;
• Coordinate and organize promotional activities on general safety awareness and education;
• Assist to identify safety hazards, recommend preventive measures and to conduct reviews on existing safety and emergency procedures;
• Maintain a webpage on work safety practices to inculcate safety consciousness in the work environment.
  

Towards fulfilling its terms of reference, the Safety Committee will take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure that:

• the risks to safety and health throughout its undertakings are properly assessed;
• there are safe systems of work in place;
• there is a safe and healthy place of work; and
• staff and students alike are given adequate supervision, information, instruction and training in order to carry out their work and studies safely.

Likewise, stepping up these efforts, staff and students have this responsibility to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of visitors who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Staff and student co-operation and commitment are essential to ensuring successful implementation of the safety and health systems, controls and procedures.
