Collaborations with Industry

The School of Computer Engineering continues to work with partners in the industry to produce research that is relevant to their needs.  A number of successful projects have been completed through such collaborations.  Some of the more recent on-going work and significant industrial partners can be found below.

  1. Sun Microsystems Pte Ltd

Joint participation with SUN in scientific engineering with premier institutions in India started in March 2003. Both SUN and NTU shall jointly develop a list of projects targeting potential India partners. SUN shall provide technology transfers to NTU and participating India Institutions in the areas of technologies for scientific engineering and research.

  2. Omniway Solutions

Collaboration with Omniway Solutions extends to the establishment of the consortium in association with the Centre for Graphics and Imaging Technologies (CGIT). A 2-year research project commenced in Oct 2002 in the production of a Plot and Teaser for 3D Computer Animated Movie.

  3. Defence Science & Technology Agency

A research project with DSTA to jointly develop a solution to guarantee causality for inter- simulator communications was established in Aug 2002 with funding of $232,000.

  4. Compaq Computer Asia

Collaboration with Compaq Computer Asia resulted in the setting up of the BioInformatics Research Centre. Compaq Computer Asia would also be funding $4 million in scholarships and research projects commencing 12 Mar 2002.

  5. CEI Contract Manufacturing Ltd

Joint research in scheduling and optimization in high-mix low-volume manufacturing was established in January 2002 for a period of 5 years.

  6. CID, Singapore Police Force

Collaboration in the general area of computer forensics was established in December 2001.

  7. ST Microelectronics

A joint research project to study techniques for audio transmission over the wireless channel commenced in March 2001.

  8. A*STAR

Formerly called NSTB, A*STAR has funded a number of large projects in our School.  One of them was for the project “Parallel and Distributed Simulation for Virtual Factory Implementation” which was completed in 2000.  On-going funding for other projects include “Advanced Hardware Acceleration Initiative” (S$1.5m funding over 5 years) and “International Video Communication Network” (S$1.42m over 3 years) which is a joint project with SingAREN.

  9. Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore

A project in excess of S$2m funded jointly by MPA, A*STAR (formerly NSTB) and NTU commenced in October 2000.  The three-year project aims to develop a simulation system to study the handling of mega container vessels in a high capacity terminal.

  10. Silicon Graphics Pte Ltd

Collaboration with Silicon Graphics also extends to the establishment of the consortium in association with the Centre for Graphics and Imaging Technologies (CGIT).  Research in interactive improvisational synthetic actors is also supported by Silicon Graphics from May 2000.

  11. Intergraph Systems (South East Asia) Pte Ltd

Collaboration with INTERGRAPH extends to the establishment of the consortium in association with the Centre for Graphics and Imaging Technologies (CGIT).  A 3-year research project commenced in May 2000 on the development of practical and novel animation methodologies and theoretical models of generating realistic motions of characters for facilitating the process of making computer-animated films.

  12. Ericsson Cyberlab Singapore

Collaboration with Ericsson commenced in October 1999.  Their on-going support and collaboration is in the area of emerging mobile computing technology.

  13. ISAVISION GmbH, Germany

Collaboration on a project to develop a low cost hybrid massively parallel computing system commenced in September 1999.

  14. Infineon Technologies (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd

Infineon specific research and development in embedded systems is conducted through the Centre for High Performance Embedded Systems.  This on-going collaboration started in 1998.

  15. Fraunhofer – IGD, Germany

Collaboration with Fraunhofer IGD resulted in the establishment of the Research Centre for Advanced Media Technology (CAMTech).  A number of collaborative projects are on-going through this Centre since Oct 1997.
