3. Registration Policies, Rules & Regulations
• Students are to check their courses registered
in STARS (and not Edventure) at the end of the Add/Drop
period to ensure that their records are correct.
• Students are not to hold on to their places
in any classes if they have no wish to read the course.
They are to withdraw from the places early so that
these places may be released to the other students.
• Students are to leave the STARS environment
once they have completed their registration. This
is to ease the load on the network.
• Before the commencement of each semester,
all students must register for courses that they
will be reading in the semester unless they have
been granted leave of absence by the University.
• Registration of courses is done through the
Student Automated Registration System (STARS) according
to the schedule announced by the University. Students
who join any classes without registration through
STARS will not be allowed to take the examinations
for the courses involved.
• The University will not accept any registration
of course through the course coordinators/tutors.
Similarly, deregistration of courses through the
course coordinators/tutors are not accepted. All
requests must be submitted to the Schools’ Registration
Coordinators for review.
• Students on Academic Warning and Academic
Probation are NOT allowed to overload.
Outstanding Tuition Fees
• Students who do not meet the deadlines given
by the Office of Finance for payment of tuition fees
and whose tuition fees remain in arrears despite
repeated reminders by the Office will not be allowed
to register their courses.
Students who face any financial difficulties to
clear the outstanding tuition fees are advised to
approach the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
to apply for any possible financial assistance schemes.
• Students are also not allowed to change the
index number of their courses after the add/drop
period.
• A student who is still registered for a course
after the Add/Drop period and did not subsequently
sit for the examination will be deemed to have sat
and failed the course. 'F' grade will appear on his
official transcript.
• Students who are on attachment will not be
allowed to register for any course even if the classes
are conducted in the evening.
4. Registration Schedule
The instructions and dates of the registration activities
will be communicated to students via email. Students
are therefore expected to check their NTU e-mail
account regularly. The information will also be posted
on the OAS website:

6. General Education Requirements
The General Education Requirement (GER) embodies
the educational philosophy that undergraduates should
be trained, not just in narrow technical or professional
fields, but also in critical thinking, reasoning,
communication and quantitative skills applicable
to a broad range of occupations. It covers
courses in key fields of knowledge in the humanities,
sciences and business to build the core competencies
of a well-rounded graduate, while providing a wide
selection of free electives and enrichment options
to cater for individual interests.
Curriculum Structure of GER
The GER is divided into 3 areas of studies to provide
a comprehensive range of broadening study into
different kinds of learning. It includes a combination
of courses as follow:
(i) Core
Courses (ie. GER-Core): This includes courses
relating to Human Resource Management and Communication
Skills which are fundamental for honing interpersonal
skills, and Singapore Studies which aims to imbue
critical thinking and appreciation of national
issues and policies expected of a graduate. The
courses here are specifically catered to the individual
needs of different programmes.
(ii) Prescribed
Electives (ie. GER-PE): This includes courses
categorised into 3 sub-areas of studies relating
to Art, Humanities & Social Sciences [ie. GER-PE(AHSS)];
Business & Management [ie. GER-PE(BM)]; and
Science, Technology &
Society [ie. GER-PE(STS)]. These areas represent
the key fields of knowledge broadly relevant to all
professions. Each sub-area comprises a range of courses
for flexibility of choices. The combination of courses
to be read among these sub-areas varies according
to the different needs of the respective programmes.
Generally, more courses in a particular sub-area
is required if it falls outside the disciplinary
study of a programme. The courses here are
commonly offered to all students.
(iii) Unrestricted
Electives (ie. GER-UE): This includes any other
courses offered to suit individual interests and
goals. The essence of this area of study in tailoring
students' preference for either more generalisation
or more specialisation, including the chance to
obtain a secondary qualification in another field
of study through a Minor. Students have several
options to fulfill GER-UE through:
- Unrestricted Electives offered by the Schools.
- Relevant
Technical / Prescribed Electives from the student's
disciplinary curriculum.
- Courses
from Minors.
- Enrichment
Programmes such as URECA.
7. AU Load of GER-PE

Request Form for Special Arrangement for Course
Registration
If
you wish to overload beyond the maximum AUs allowed,
please fill up the Special arrangement for Course
Registration Form (Pink Form). You can get this form
from the SCE general Office at N4-2A-32. Please put
in your name, matric number, NTU email address and
contact number.
** Please
do not fill up this form to appeal for taking courses
with clashes in class timetable or clashes in examination
timetable. Such requests will NOT be entertained.
Steps:
1. Students are
to approach their Mentor to seek advice.
2. Mentor
can recommend/not recommend.
3. If
recommended, Mentor then forwards the PINK form
to the Year Coordinator.
4. Year
Coordinator will endorse/not endorse, and forward
to Associate Chair (Academic) for approval.
5. If
approved, PRF will go to SCE Registration Team
for processing. An email will be sent to students
to inform
them of the outcome. Please
check your emails regularly.
The
procedure stated above is for all current students
EXCEPT for the year one students (AY2009/2010).
For the latter group, please refer to Online
Overloading System (applicable only to AY 2009/10
intake)
10.
Online Overloading System (applicable only to AY
2009/10 intake)
An online overloading
application system has been rolled out for Year
One students only. Students may apply to overload
more AUs beyond the automatic allowable limits through
an online overloading application form which replaces the
need for the PINK FORM stated above.
The
URL to the online overloading system (for students)
is at:
https://sso.wis.ntu.edu.sg/webexe88/owa/sso_login1.asp?p2=https://wis.ntu.edu.sg/pls/webexe/
aus_estamp.apply_estamp
Students will be notified of their request by email.
If students do not hear from the school 3 days before
the end of the add/drop period, do contact the respective
mentor immediately.
For
students under AW/AP cases, the OAFA subject
registration system will prompt the students with
the message "Students who have been placed
under Academic Warning (AW) or Academic Probation
(AP) are not allowed to overload additional
subject. Please consult your academic mentor /
advisor for further discussion".
Description
of Workflow
After
the student has submitted the online form, it will
be routed to his/her Mentor for a first level endorsement.
At this stage, the Mentor may recommend or reject
the student's overloading application (with a counseling
process). If recommended, it will be routed to the
second level approving officer for final approval.
An email notification of approval will be sent to
the student who must register for the overloaded
subject(s) themselves.
Note:
School-level approval does not guarantee a place
for the subjects requested. Availability depends
on time-table constraints, vacancies and pre-requisite
requirements.
If
the Mentor rejects the application, an automated
email will be sent to notify the student of the outcome
(not approved) of his/her subject overloading application.
Students
are discouraged from submitting their online application
towards the end of the Add/Drop period. If you have
to do that, make sure you follow up closely with
your Mentor to check the status of your requests.
