Q: What is the normal (nominal) workload?
A: A normal workload is the school suggested
core and prescribed elective(s) for the semester
concerned.
Q: Is normal workload equivalent to normal registration?
A: NO! The Registration System allows a student
to register one course above the normal load for
that semester in his year of study provided that
there is no clash in the timetable. However, during
the allocated (normal) registration time slot, each
student is only allowed to register up to normal
load for that semester. During the overload period
and the add/drop period (shown in the registration
schedule in StudentLink), each student (not on Academic
Warning or Academic Probation) is automatically
allowed 4 AU overload.
The maximum AUs allowed by the STARS will therefore
be the normal load for the semester plus another
4 AUs for the additional course. The registered
courses can be in the lower level, same level or
ONE level higher. They could be core subjects, prescribed
electives or general electives.
Note:
1. Students on Academic Warning
and Academic Probation are not allowed to register
more than the normal load. In other words, no
overload of even one course is allowed for these
students.
2. A minimum CGPA of 2.0 must be maintained
at the end of each semester to qualify for the
overloading of courses.
Q: When can I register for my core courses
and major electives for S1 AY 2008-09?
A: The Office of Academic Services will
inform you on the date of release of Class Schedule
via email. You will be granted access to STARS based
on your Registration Study Year i.e. study year
in Semester 1 of AY 2008-09.
Q: When can I register for my GER UE/PEs?
A: You will be allowed to place up to a maximum
of 5 choices of GER UE/PEs on waitlist on the SAME
day that you register for your core courses and
major electives. The release of GERPE/UE allocation
results will be announced at a later date. Please
look out for the email from OAS regarding this date.
The course will be registered for you if you have
been successful in your application. If you do not
wish to read the course, you must de-register it
during the Add/Drop period. Otherwise, we will take
it that you are still reading the course and will
grade you at the end of the semester.
Q: I am unable to register for the course that I
need during my allocated registration timeslot,
what should I do?
A: Do not panic. Please register for whatever
courses you are able to. You will be allowed to
register up to the normal load during the allocated
timeslot. After 5pm on the
same day, you
will be able to register the remaining overloading
course (4AUs). At the end of the day, if you there
are still no vacancies in the course (SCE subjects
only) that you want to register, please email to
SCESUBJREG@ntu.edu.sg.
Please put in your name, matric number, NTU email
address and contact number. We will try our best
to help you.
Q: I wish to overload beyond the maximum AUs allowed,
what should I do?
A: Please fill up the Special Arrangement for
Course Registration Form (Pink Form). You can get
this form from the SCE General Office at N4-2A-32.
Please put in your name, matric number, NTU email
address and contact number.
Steps:
1. Students
are to approach their Mentor to seek advice.
2. Mentor
can recommend/not recommend.
3. If
recommended, Mentor then forwards the PINK form
to the Year Coordinator.
4. Year
Coordinator will endorse/not endorse, and forward
to Assoc Chair (Academic) for approval.
5. If
approved, the 'pink form' will go to SCE Registration
Team for processing. An email will be sent to students
to inform them of the outcome. Please check your
emails regularly.
The procedure stated
above is for all current students EXCEPT for
the year one students (new intake). For the
latter group, please see below.
Online Overloading
System (applicable only to new intake)
An online overloading application system
has been rolled out for year one students only.
Students may apply to overload more AUs beyond the
automatic allowable limits through an online
overloading application form which replaces
the need for the PINK FORM stated above.
The URL to the online overloading system (for
students) is at:
For students under AW/AP cases, the OAFA
subject registration system will prompt the students
with the message "Students who have been placed
under Academic Warning (AW) or Academic Probation
(AP) are not allowed to overload additional
subject. Please consult your academic mentor / advisor
for further discussion".
Description of Workflow
After the student has submitted the online form,
it will be routed to his/her Mentor for a first
level endorsement. At this stage, the Mentor may
recommend or reject the student's overloading application
(with a counseling process). If recommended, it
will be routed to the second level approving officer
for final approval. An email notification of approval
will be sent to the student who must register
for the overloaded subject(s) themselves.
Note: School-level
approval does not guarantee a place for the subjects
requested. Availability depends on time-table constraints,
vacancies and pre-requisite requirements.
If the Mentor rejects the application, an automated
email will be sent to notify the student of the
outcome (not approved) of his/her subject overloading
application.
Students are discouraged from submitting their
online application towards the end of the Add/Drop
period. If you have to do that, make sure you follow
up closely with your Mentor to check the status
of your requests.
For Mentee: Online Overloading System
•
The online overloading is applicable to student
enrolled in AY08/09 and registering for study
year one in Semester 2.
–
Students will be notified of their request
by email.
–
If students do not hear from the school 3
days before the end of the add/drop period,
do contact the respective mentor immediately.
Application for other
levels of study is as per current practice of PINK
form submission.
Students may not add nor drop any subjects after
Add/Drop period. Students who drop a subject after
the end of Add/Drop period will be deemed to have
sat and failed the subject. A grade of ‘F’ will
appear on the official transcript and zero mark/grade
point (for students who follow the GPA system) will
be used in the computation of marks CGPA for the
classification of degree.
Q: I encounter a clash in my timetable and
I am unable to register the affected courses in
STARS due to this clash. Please advise.
A: Please revise your timetable and try
again. Sometimes, the clash can only be resolved
if you choose a different tutorial and lab group
combination for a course. Eg: Instead of sticking
to SE1 for CPE201, choose SE1 for tutorial but SE3
for lab if doing so will help resolve the clash.
However, you will no be able to register such special
combination yourself in STARS unless the special
index number already exists (due to some other student
requesting for it). For such special requests, please
fill up the PINK FORM (see above procedures) and
write down the special combination clearly so that
the Registration Advisors can help you to register
the course.
Note: Students are not
allowed to take courses with examination timetable
clashes. Such requests will NOT be entertained.
Q: Where else can I go if I need help on
curriculum matters, network problems, STARS, etc?
A: Students should make an appointment
to see his/her Mentor or Year Coordinator
(either by calling or through email). The year
coordinators and their contact numbers are:
Yr1: A/Prof Lee Keok Kee (6790 5632)
Yr2: Asst/Prof Seow Kiam
Tian (6790 4288)
Yr3: A/Prof Zheng Jianmin (6790 6257)
Yr4: Asst/Prof Tang Xueyan (6790 5356)
