Lucent Technologies recognizes
two Singaporean students with science scholarships
FOR RELEASE THURSDAY JULY 12,
2001
SINGAPORE - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced
two Singaporean winners for its Global Science Scholars
Program at an awards ceremony held in its Asia Pacific
Training and Education and Technical Support Centre.
This is the first time that the Global Science Scholars
Program has been awarded in Singapore. The award is
targeted at tertiary students pursuing careers in
communications and information technology.
The scholarships were awarded
to Bernardine Kwan Wen Hui from the National University
of Singapore and Alvin Teo Shih Howe from the Nanyang
Technological University.
"We are pleased to launch
the Lucent's Global Science Scholar Program in Singapore
for the first time. Our aim is to ensure that young
and talented Singaporeans who are interested in
info-communications technologies are given an opportunity
to grow and learn alongside renowned research and
development institutions like Lucent's Bell Labs,"
said Raymond Tan, president, Lucent Technologies
Singapore. "This will also help to further
develop the talents of young people who will contribute
to Singapore's growing importance as an info-comms
hub for the region."
Today each student received a
cheque for US$5,000. They will also visit Bells
Labs' New Jersey headquarters for a Global Summit
from 23-27 July 2001. At the Summit, both students
will interact with 108 fellow program winners from
21 other countries.
An independent panel of experts
was involved in the selection of the winners of
the Global Science Scholars program in Singapore.
The selection was based on each student's overall
academic ability, including their extra curricular
achievements and performances from their secondary
schools, colleges and university.
Both Bernardine Kwan and Alvin
Teo have indicated their excitement and honor in
being elected as the first two winners of this program
in Singapore.
"I am very pleased and honored
to be selected as a Global Science Scholar as this
is a chance of a lifetime for me, " said Alvin
Teo. "I am thrilled to be able to participate
in the Global Summit and meet with the scientists
and Nobel winners from Bell Labs. Moreover, I am
looking forward to meeting with and exchanging ideas
with scholars from all over the world."
"It is an honor for me to
be selected as well," said Bernardine Kwan.
"This is a great opportunity for me to enhance
my understanding of communications technologies
as well as explore concepts and development of technologies
with eminent scientists from Bell Labs and scholars
from all over the world. It will also contribute
much to my dream of being in the research and development
field after my graduation."
In Singapore, the Global Science
Scholars Program was administered by the Institute
of International Education (IIE), a non-profit organization
based in New York.
Launched in 1998, Lucent's Global
Science Scholars program is one of the world's largest
annual talent competitions reaching 21 countries
and regions.
