School of Applied Science Graduate
Wins The 1997 IEEE Computer Society, Lance Stafford
Larson Outstanding Student Paper Award
Mr. Showbhik Kalra, a graduate
of the School of Applied Science, is the proud winner
of the prestigious IEEE Computer Society Lance Stafford
Larson Award, which challenges some of the best
minds in universities around the world to write
outstanding technical papers on a computer related
subject.
The IEEE Computer Society award
was established by the Larson family in memory of
their son, who died in an electrical accident while
he was an undergraduate at the University of Maryland.
The Larson family created this award to motivate
students to excel in the field of computer science
and to encourage students to develop excellence
in their communication skills. An award of US$500
is given each year to the first-place winner.
Mr. Showbhik's prize winning
paper entitled, "Bi-directional Motion Estimation
via Vector Propagation," was judged on technical
content, writing skill, and overall presentation
excellence. The paper was the work of Showbhiks
Accelerated Honours Project at School of Applied
Science, supervised by Dr. Chong Man Nang. Mr. Showbhik
Kalra completed his B.A.Sc. (Computer Engineering)
in the School of Applied Science in November 1997
and is currently a research engineer at the NSTB
Centre for Signal Processing.
