Biotechnology & Bioengineering
The School focuses on areas at the frontiers of biotechnology and bioengineering research:
- Bionanotechnology & bionano-devices – Advanced bionanotechnologies are being developed for novel biochips, bioMEMS, bioelectronics, biosensors, biofuel cells and molecular devices.
- Biomaterials for tissue engineering & drug/gene delivery – Novel biocompatible and bioresponsive scaffolds are being developed for tissue engineering and drug/gene delivery. The investigations emphasize on stem cell applications, biomaterial/cell patterning, tissue regeneration/ integration and microencapsulation.
- Biophysical signaling & bioreactors – Mass transfer and mechanical signals in cellular constructions are being manipulated and analyzed with novel bioreactors by which cell-cell and cell-substrate interactions are measured and optimized.
- Medical diagnosis & screening – Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-host interactions are being explored with novel cellular signaling techniques that aim at early diagnosis of HB-induced liver cancers and relevant pharmacological responses.
- Environmental biotechnology & biocatalysis – Site-directed mutagenesis is being manipulated to generate organosphoporus hydrolase mutants with improved catalytic characteristics for bioremediation of organophosphates in the environment.
