Evacuation and emergency procedures

The purpose of the Evacuation and Emergency Procedures is to establish minimum requirements that will provide a reasonable degree of life safety from fire and similar emergencies in all SCBE teaching and research labs. The Emergency Evacuation Procedures will be utilized to evacuate all occupants regardless of the type of emergency.

4. If the fire is small or in its earliest stages and can be fought effectively with the available     extinguishers, then trained person may attempt to extinguish such fires providing there     is no life safety hazard to the users, and such action will not endanger others.

5. If the fire is big, then evacuate the building via the staircase. Do not use     elevators/Lifts.

6. In the event of evacuation, turn off bunsen burners and other electrical equipment,     evacuate the building following the emergency exit signs.

7. The sounding of the fire alarm signifies a red alert. All staff who are not part of the     evacuation team must evacuate.

Also, please keep all     doors shut to prevent fire from spreading. In the event of failure of the SmartCard     system, doors and windows may be opened using the “emergency door release”     buttons located immediately next to the door or any other hard objects.

9. If it is not possible to get to the staircase, then get onto outside balconies. If it is not     possible to get to the stairs from the balcony, wait for the Fire Department to rescue you     by ladder.

10. Evacuate to the meeting point indicated on each lab’s escape route.

11. Remain at a safe location and Assemble for roll call with other members of your group.        Do not leave until your name has been checked off the list. Do not return to the        building until the Fire Department gives the all clear.
