Q: What is Nanyang President's Graduate Scholarship (NPGS)?
A: The Nanyang President's Graduate Scholarship (NPGS) is a competitive and prestigious scholarship scheme designed to encourage outstanding graduates or final-year students to take their first step towards a leading research career by studying for a doctoral degree programme (PhD) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Funding will be provided for up to 4 years for NPGS awardees.
Q: Who can apply for NPGS
A: The award is only for new incoming students. To qualify for a NPGS award, you must have a First Class Honours degree or equivalent at Bachelor's level. At the time of application, if you have not yet completed your undergraduate degree programme, you will need to furnish documentation from your university that you are on track to get a First Class Honours degree or equivalent.
Q: How many awards will be given out each year?
A: Up to 30 NPGS awards will be made available in each Academic Year.
Q: Is there a bond for NPGS? Am I required to take up citizenship? A: There is no bond. You are not required to take up citizenship.
Q: Do I have to work in Singapore after graduation? A: No, you are not required to work in Singapore after graduation.
Q: Can I exit the NPGS scheme with a Masters degree? A: The award is intended for PhD programme and is not intended for students who wish to obtain only a Master's degree.
Award terms
Q: What does the award cover?
A: The NPGS award terms are:
a) Monthly stipend of S$3200
b) Full support of tuition fees
c) Priority would be given for subsidised campus accommodation
d) Conference allowance for two major overseas conferences in the 4-year period
e) One-time IT allowance of S$1500
f) Annual grant of S$500 for journal subscription or book purchase
g) Thesis preparation allowance
Research projects
Q: Do I have to source for my own research supervisor in advance to apply for NPGS?
A: Although you are not required to, you are strongly advised to source for your own supervisors in advance. You are encouraged to browse through the various Schools' research websites and select projects according to your research interests, passion, and academic background, and make contact with the professor concerned.
Q: How can I find out more information on the research projects listed on the website? Can I propose my own research project?
A: You are welcome to email any of the professors for more information about their research projects. You may also email to them and discuss with them about proposing your own research project. Please note that your preferred supervisors or projects may not always be available. However, the University will help you find appropriate supervisors and projects if you are awarded the NPGS.
Q: Are there any coursework requirements to be fulfilled? If yes, what are the modules I have to take?
A: In addition to a research thesis, there will be some coursework requirements to be fulfilled as determined by the university. Please note that there may be other additional requirements depending on the individual schools.
Q: Can I pursue a PhD degree in a field of study different from my bachelor major?
A: You may pursue a PhD degree in any field of study for which you can demonstrate interest and capability. The scholarship award committee will look at your academic record and testimonials to assess your suitability for the chosen field, in discussion with the supervisors and yourself.
Q: Will I be exempted from courses that I've taken during my Masters?
A: You may be granted some exemptions on a case-by-case basis, subject to the approval of the School.

Q: How can I apply for NPGS?
A: You will first need to fill up an online application form and submit it through the University website. You must then send hard copies of supporting documents to:

(a) Printout of On-line Application Form (b) Two recent photographs, passport size (c) Photocopy of TOEFL/IELTS Score (d) Photocopy of GRE/GMAT/GATE Scores (e) Official Transcripts (Master's degree)

Q: Can I apply for other scholarships in addition to NPGS?
A: Yes, but you can only hold one award.
Q: Is there any application fee for NPGS?
A: There is no application fee for NPGS.
Q: When can I apply for the NPGS?
A: Application for the August or January intakes will be open from 1 Nov to 31 Jan every year. Applicants who are interested to apply for the August or January intake should apply during this period.
Q. When will I know the results for NPGS?
A: Only successful NPGS candidates will be informed via email or post. The results will usually be known in May or June.
Q: Do I need to submit an NPGS application in addition to the application for Research Programme?
A: Yes, you will need to submit an NPGS application through this website from 1 Nov to 31 Jan and indicate which intake you intend to admitted for. We regret to inform that only applications through the NPGS website will be considered for the NPGS award.
