Chronological Events of NTU-Stanford University Collaboration

Sep 1995 A general collaboration MOU was signed in 1993 between NTU and Stanford. Following that, NTU’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), with Stanford’s Dept of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE), launched the 1st Stanford-Nanyang Executive Program (SNEP) on International Construction Management.

A 2nd SNEP Program on International Construction Management was organised in 1997.

1997-98 CEE (Stanford) and CEE (NTU) professors jointly conducted a collaborative research project on oil spill dispersion study for shallow water.

Mar 1999 The CEE (NTU) Dean, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, led a delegation to visit CEE (Stanford) to discuss research collaboration. CEE (Stanford) was invited to send their professors on exploratory visits to CEE (NTU).

Jul 1999 Professor Lynn Hildemann from CEE (Stanford) visited CEE (NTU) for discussions on collaborative research projects.

Oct 1999 Professor James Leckie, Director of the Environmental Engineering and Science Program (EES) in Stanford University, visited CEE (NTU) to discuss the collaboration in environmental engineering research. A joint research programme on a wide-range of environmental problems was agreed upon.

Mar 2000 Professor Cheong led a CEE (NTU) delegation on a follow-up visit to CEE (Stanford) to strengthen the collaboration. Discussion focussed on a joint research programme to develop technologies for producing potable water and harnessing existing supplies from unconventional sources – Stanford faculty expressed strong interest in this ‘clean water programme’. An MOU between Stanford University and NTU to promote research collaboration in environmental and other engineering areas was signed in Stanford University.

Subsequently, NTU and Stanford University established the Clean Water Programme for joint research into and technology transfer of water purification technologies for Singapore.

Jan 2000 A Clean Water Forum is jointly organized by NTU, Stanford University, Public Utilities Board and the Ministry of the Environment. It will involve both Stanford and NTU professors. Seven Stanford professors will also conduct a series of technical seminars on various aspects of environmental engineering.
