Dr Law obtained his B.Eng. degree from the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, University of Hong Kong, and M. Sc. and Ph.D. from the Department of Civil Engineering, University of California at Berkeley. His first professional job was with Hydro-Research Science that performed physical and numerical modeling analysis related to hydraulics, coastal and water resources projects for government and private companies. Specific projects included modeling of pump sumps and intakes, marina protection and circulation, flood water diversion, forensic flood analysis, ground water contamination, and many others. Subsequently he was with the Geotechnical and Hydraulic Engineering Service of the Bechtel Corporation working on a wide area of hydraulic and coastal engineering, with primary focus on numerical modeling. Specific projects included analysis of tidal circulation and contaminant transport in the ocean, dam break studies, coastal protection, simulation of thermal behavior in ponds and lakes, and hydrological rainfall analysis. From 1995 he has been teaching hydraulic and coastal engineering in the Nanyang Technological University.

He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, International Association of Hydraulic Research, and American Society of Civil Engineer.

His current research interests focus on the transport of contaminant in the ocean in the presence of current and waves. Present research projects include experimental studies of wave-induced drift of surface oil patches, turbulent mixing of pollutant discharges from ocean outfall, turbulent mixing of inclined gravity plume, and numerical modeling of shoreline contamination by oilspills. Other research interests include hydrodynamic effect on flow over complex topography, and wave-structure-seabed interaction.

Research Project: Investigations of buoyant jet discharges using combined Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF)

Research Profile: Environmental fluid mechanics, with special emphasis on wastewater disposal and impact, wastewater treatment processes, and pollutant transport in coastal environment.
