Dr Chua obtained his B. Eng. (Civil) from the National University of Singapore and M.Eng. and PhD degrees from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Upon completion of his PhD degree, he worked for 2½ years as a civil engineer on various sewerage infrastructural projects with the Ministry of the Environment (ENV), Singapore, after which he left ENV to pursue post-doctoral research studies. He worked as an Assistant Research Professor at the Dept. of Hydrodynamics and Water Resources (ISVA), Technical University of Denmark, for 1½ years. He continued his research interests while working as Mitarbeiter at the Lerhrstuhl für Bauinformatik (LfB), BTU Cottbus, for a further 2½ years. Dr Chua returned to NTU as Research Fellow in 2003. He was appointed as a Teaching Fellow in 2004 and subsequently as Assistant Professor in July 2005.

Dr Chua researched both on experimental and analytical studies on the phenomenon of shear layer excitation due to impingement or resonance effects. In addition, he is interested in the role played by turbulence in various processes in the coastal environment. He has researched on the effects of turbulence on sediment transport and wave boundary layers.
More recently, Dr Chua’s research focus has shifted to general areas in water resources. He was recently involved in the Clean Water Programme, which is a 3-year study on the feasibility of using reclaimed lands as aquifer storage and recovery facilities. He is currently involved in several urban water management projects which include topics such as real time monitoring/simulations, urban catchment hydrology, modeling of rainfall-runoff from urban catchments and water quality of urban runoff. He also maintains an interest in the applications soft computational tools particularly artificial neural networks in the modeling of the rainfall-runoff process. He is currently teaching subjects related to hydraulics and surface hydrology.

| Dr Chua was granted the Shaw Foundation Scholarship for his undergraduate studies. He is also one of the recipients of the 2005 Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize (ASCE), awarded for the paper: “Influence of Turbulence on Bed Load Sediment Transport”, Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, ASCE, 2003, by B M Sumer, Lloyd H C Chua, N S Cheng and Jorgen Fredsoe. |
