| Research and Development
In
order to promote a tradition of rich research culture
in civil engineering, the School has been channelling
much of its energy and resources to developing state-of-the-art
facilities and pursuing co-operative research projects
with leading academic institutions and industries.
The School's research activities come
under the undergraduate final year projects, the graduate
studies by research and R & D activities
by the academic and research staff and their collaboration
with industry.
The diverse research interests of the
staff in the school can be broadly classified into the
following six major areas:
| Construction
Technology and Management |
Structures
and Mechanics |
| Environmental
and Water Resources |
Transportation
Engineering |
| Geotechnical
Engineering |
Surveying
Geographic Information System
(GIS)
Global Positioning System
(GPS)
|
Within
each of these areas, much of the R & D activities
are directed towards projects which have industrial
applications and which are relevant to Singapore and
the region.
Although some of the important research
works are carried out without any special funding, funded
research projects accounts for most of the current research
activities. In addition to the NTU applied research
projects and industry-sponsored projects, the School
has successfully obtained funding from the Ministry
of Finance, the Ministry of Education as well as from
the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) in
collaboration with local industrial partners.
Research Centres
In concordance with the School's objective
to achieve academic and research excellence, and to
bring together resources for intensive research, five
research centres have been established. Their activities
will focus not only on research and development but
also on professional training and technology transfer.
