Excellence in Environmental Science & Engineering

The NEWRI Environmental Master of Science (NEMS) programme is offered by NTU's School of Civil & Environmental Engineering with a Summer attachment at Stanford University, and the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) on the research project component.

NTU via NEWRI (www.ntu.edu.sg/NEWRI) is enabling Singapore to be a global hub of environmental science and technology in providing technological solutions to the world. It is committed to environmental and water technologies (EWT) through its ecosystem of education, research and developmental activities. As the coordinating body of NTU's EWT efforts, NEWRI pulls together NTU's water and environment-related centers and institutes leveraging off one another's strengths for the benefit of industry and society. Its research groups examine processes of desalination, reduction of energy consumption and recovery in treatment, biofilms and bioprocesses, resource reclamation, and residues and wastewater treatment. Over the next five years, NEWRI plans to produce 400 Masters and 120 PhDs, and also create technologies that can be transferred to industry.

Environmental engineering serves an increasingly crucial role as the Asia Pacific region continues to advance and develop while striving to maintain the quality of life associated with clean air, water and land, and sustainability of natural resources. The NEMS programme plays an important role in addressing these issues.

Under the collaboration, excellence in education and research in the environmental area as well as interactions between academia, industry and government agencies are developed and sustained.

Students under NEMS will have opportunities to do their research project under NEWRI as well as to continue for PhD work.
