Main Topics

The Conference program is organized into the following streams:

Stream 1: International Construction Project Management

Construction is no longer a localized industry. Under the WTO framework, international construction is now a must for every construction company to diversify and expand its market. This stream will provide the platform for discussion of important topics such as opportunities and challenges for international construction, globalization of construction industry, government legislations and policies for foreign investment, cross-border movement of construction resources, distinctive and comparative country practices, cultural issues, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and partnering.

Stream 2: Project Finance and Risk Management

The financial reforms and corporate governance introduced by governments and companies in Asia after the financial and currency crisis in the 90s have brought about greater transparency and stability in their cash flows and balance sheets. In the financing and development of infrastructure projects, the professionals involved have sought for better and more rigorous risk management techniques and innovative approaches in project development. The papers in this stream will include topics and case studies on public-private-partnerships, risk management analysis and techniques in infrastructure and construction projects, risk allocation and payment mechanisms, as well as financing solutions used in developing infrastructure projects.

    Stream 3: Project Procurement

Construction project management encompasses the operation and characteristics of alternative types of procurement and project delivery systems. The modes of procurement include Design-Bid-Build, Design-and-Build, Design-Build-Operate, Build-Operate-Transfer and variants of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). This stream will cover strategies and changes in the construction procurement scene, forms and conditions of contracts, contractual arrangements, partnering and joint ventures, tendering and evaluation procedures.

Stream 4: Contract Administration and Dispute Resolution

The construction liabilities for both the construction and post construction period have become increasingly important items in construction project management and the disputes involved must be advantageously resolved with minimum cost, delay and disruption. Papers in this stream are expected to cover a wide range of construction contract related issues. These include contract administration issues, project cases illustrations on frequently applied principles in contract law, case studies on contract disputes, contracts for different types of construction projects, financial protection of non-performance defective work or insolvency, opportunities for arbitration, mediation and other alternatives to the settlement in courts.

Stream 5: Information Technology (IT) for Construction

The construction industry has always been known to be fragmented. Construction organizations worldwide recognize the impact of information technology and automation on the successful completion of their projects. Some organizations have taken the approach of incorporating information technology into the design and planning stage of the construction sequence. Others have focused on introducing automation and information technology on the sites. Papers in this stream are expected to cover the recent influx of e-commerce, e-procurement and other information technology services into the industry and the strategies adopted in integrating all these technologies to improving the industry.

Stream 6: Contemporary Issues in Construction

Construction project management is aimed primarily at completing construction project at best quality, lowest cost and shortest duration. To achieve such aims, new frontiers in technologies and management are being discovered and developed. The papers in this stream will include topics such as new construction technologies, project team empowerment, as well as the state-of-the-art construction management methods, advanced construction techniques, potential innovations, emerging technologies and practices. Other construction topics which are not already covered under streams 1 to 5 and deemed to form contemporary issues will also be included in this stream.
