Local Attachment

Background

In the curriculum structure at NTU all students are required to undergo practical attachment in various organisations as part of their degree courses. The period of attachment varies from 8 weeks to 24 weeks depending on the students' course of studies.

The student's performance during attachment is assessed (graded in the case of Industrial Attachment) and considered as partial fulfillment for their Bachelor degree courses at NTU. Since 1983, we have launched many successful attachment programmes with organisations in Singapore.

Objective

The purposes of the attachment programmes are to supplement NTU's in-house practical professional training or/and to lessen the on-the-job training of these students when they graduate, as well as to instill in them the right kind of work attitude and work professionalism, so that they can become effective and productive to their respective organisations much sooner than is usual for fresh graduates.

Assessment of Students

Participating organisation is required to assign a supervisor, preferably an engineer or a professional staff to supervise the students and assess their work performance during their attachment. Students will also be supervised and assessed by NTU staff.

Attachment Programme

Participating organisation is required to provide an attachment programme. The programme should emphasize on applications, management and hands-on experience for the student to meet the following attachment objectives:

  • to apply knowledge learned in the University;
  • to acquire skills needed to become practice-oriented engineers or professionals;
  • to strengthen work values through an improved understanding of themselves and the work environment; and
  • to gain interpersonal skills that promotes personal growth and development.
Allowance & Working Hours

The allowance to be paid to the student will be determined by the organisation. As a guide, most organisations are paying $600 to $1300 per month (CPF exempted) for local attachment. This subsistence allowance paid to student to meet his/her daily expenses and board and lodging (in the case of foreign student).

Students will follow the normal office working hours of the organisation on a five-day or five-and-a-half day week basis.

Work Permit or Training Pass

Organisation taking in a foreign student who is a full-time matriculated or registered student of NTU for local attachment under NTU's attachment programme is exempted from applying for a work permit or training pass in respect of that foreign student.

Income Tax

The allowance paid to the student is not liable for income tax in Singapore as long as there is no employment contract between the student and the participating organisation.

Insurance

Students are covered against personal or bodily injuries caused by or arising out of accidents through a Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (24-hour worldwide) arranged by NTU. The University has also taken up a Public Liability Policy Insurance to indemnify organisations against claims and damages arising as a result of providing such training facilities. The territorial limits for this coverage are confined to attachment placements within Singapore and other ASEAN countries.

Certificate of Accomplishment & Book Prizes

Upon completion of the attachment programme, students will be awarded Certificates of Accomplishment, jointly signed by the Director, Career & Attachment Office, NTU and a nominated representative of the organisation. Top students are also awarded book prizes from NTU.
